Astrologically, the seventeenth day of Karthika and the second day of Shukla Paksha is celebrated as the festival of Bhai Dooj. It is a festival that solemnize the pious bond of brother-sister relationship. The essence of the festival of Bhai Dooj is very similar to that of Raksha Bandhan. The rituals of both the occasions strengthen the bond of love between siblings as both pray for each other's wellbeing.

Celebrations In Uttar Pradesh

First of all girls give their brothers a piece of cloth knotted and full of small sugar balls. After the usual ceremonies of putting tika on brother's forehead and performing his arti are done, the legendary story of Bhai Duj is narrated to brother as well as sister.

Celebrations In Bihar

The ritual of Bhai Dooj in Bihar consists of cursing the brother with the most ill sayings. The purpose of doing this is to shoo away the negative vibes from around their brother. For doing this, they punish their tongues by eating a prickly fruit. After this, the brothers are fed with Bajra roti and water from their own hands.

Celebrations In Bengal

Bhai Dooj is celebrated as Bhai Phota in Bengal. 'Phota is the sandalwood tilak that a girl anoints on the forehead of her brother. While putting the tilak, the girl chants the following mantra:

"Bhratus tabaa grajaataaham
Bhunksa bhaktamidam shuvam Preetaye yama raajasya
Yamunaah Visheshatah."

This mantra says "I, your sister making you eat these holy rice for the pleasure of Yama and Yamuna". This way she asks Gods to bless her brother with the best in life.

Celebrations In Punjab

Punjabis call the same festival by the name of Bhai Tikka. They make their tika by mixing rice and saffron. Girls put tikka on their brother's forehead and perform their Arti. Gifts and sweets are exchanged among the loved ones. The bond shared between brothers and sisters is everlasting. Whatever be the mode of ceremony, the quintessence is the same, feelings of love, care, affection and protection of each other's esteem. It's just that these beautiful emotions find expression through festivals like Bhai Dooj.
